Photo Challenge: Image at f/8.0

One of the photo groups I am a part of had a photo challenge a few weeks ago. I like to participate in these every once in a while as it’s nice to do something new and stretch yourself mentally and creatively.

We were to create an image at f/8, since normally we photographers rely on shallow depth of fields (read: blurry backgrounds) to direct the focus of an image and to create compelling images. I knew I would have to get creative with my lighting to make up for the smaller aperture. I just recently invested in an AlienBee light, so I basically tried it out for the first time with this challenge. Here’s what I came up with:

85mm, f/8, 1/100 sec, 100 ISO. Created with an Alien Bee B800 strobe + shoot-through umbrella at ~1/16 power.

I also tried this style of image, as my good friend Rik Andes does a lot of real estate photography and I just adore his work! This is my (somewhat messy!) kitchen:

18mm, f/8, 1/40 sec, 100 ISO. (I didn’t record the flash power for this, but I’d guess it was around half power.)

This stuff is so different from my usual work. I just love learning new things! What have you tried differently lately?

Happy Tuesday!
